What do you see as the future of health information and technology? Where do you think the industry can/will go?

As someone who began their nursing career by charting on paper, I had to adapt quickly to new digital technologies. I am excited to see what the next 15-20 years will bring as more digital natives enter the workforce. My college-aged sons have grown up with technology from a very young age and they have a different perspective on how to use it. I look forward to seeing the contributions of healthcare informaticists who have never had to search through a paper chart. We need to listen to their insight – I believe this will help bring healthcare technology to where it needs to be.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve encountered? How did you overcome it?

The big 2020 challenge was adjusting to a demanding technology project rollout due to the constraints of COVID-19. Our team had to change our entire training curriculum from in-person to virtual, and completely revamp the go-live support model. Due to pandemic staffing needs and budgetary constraints, our go-live support altered dramatically and required us to be creative in how we supported our end-users. Our nursing informatics team worked with IT analysts, Epic trainers, nursing professional development, and leadership to design solutions for these challenges.

What advice do you have for someone who is considering a career in health information and technology?

Reach out to people in the industry who have jobs that interest you and ask them how their career path evolved. Even if you don't know them, it is okay to reach out. 99% of people will respond. It's helpful to connect with people who already work in the industry, as they can help guide you in the right direction. Find their profiles on LinkedIn and use their education and career background to help you understand which skills you need.

What's your favorite quote and why?

"I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that's how you grow."

This quote from Marissa Mayer is a favorite. I believe it is important to constantly stretch yourself through continued growth and learning.
